Gel Memory Foam Mattress Reviews

Update: 3 years later, I still love this mattress. It’s held up, is supportive and comfortable and never sleeps hot. It’s been a very good buy for me. It’s a very good inexpensive mattress that has proven to be a great value. I replaced a 20+ year old Sleep Number mattress with this mattress. I've had it over a week now and love it. The mattress is medium firm, which I like. The top layer of gel-infused foam provides a bit of sink in comfort, but not to the extent that it's hard to move or change positions. Mine expanded to a full 12" within 2-3 hours of putting it on my bed (I kept the Sleep Number foundation on the bed under this mattress). I don't wake up with back or shoulder pain at all. My old Sleep Number mattress was giving me both. To give you an idea of the give in the top layer, I have attached a couple of pics of my dogs on the mattress. I will say, they LOVE the new mattress and I have a hard time getting my Pittie (Black & White pup) to get off of it. The Rottie/Shepherd weighs about 92 pounds and you can see, the mattress has a good amount of cushioning for joints and pressure points. It's been a GREAT buy!
I have bought 2 bed frames and 1 twin mattress from Zinus before, and love all 3 items. Then I bought this 12" queen mattress, and regret it. I read several recent reviews before purchasing this that said the bed never fully inflated, and several recent ones that said it was awesome. So I took a gamble and ordered it based on my previous purchases. Sure enough this is one of the defective mattresses. The center never expanded past 9", one end expanded to 5", and the other end never made it past 4". Looking at the negative reviews I noticed that Zinus reached out to the customers and told them their mattress was under warranty. If the customer would just reach out to Zinus' customer service they would take care of the issue and send out a new one. That is exactly what I did on 2/24/18. I received an automated response within a few hours saying that they were going to review my claim and get back to me. 7 days later and not a single word from them. I even sent a reply to their auto-email like it said to with the hopes it would draw their attention, but still nothing.
I rolled the dice on this model of mattress because, at the time of purchase, it was a little over $300 Canadian. At time of purchase, this is about the price of a bargain spring mattress. I had serious doubt that this would support me, but was worth the risk. The result was beyond my wildest expectations. The mattress provides amazing support, both for myself and my wife. I haven't slept this well in 20 years. Now, I have no way of knowing how long this mattress will last in this condition. Continued use will no doubt reduce the firmness and support of the foam. Just as spring mattresses eventually reach end of life, so too must this foam mattress. That said, I don't honestly think lifespan should be a serious consideration. The quality of the item is such that I am confident of getting at least a few years out of it, even at my size. More to the point, perhaps, the quality of the sleep is such that, at $300 Canadian for the mattress, I would glad buy a new one every year just to be able to sleep that well each night. The ability to wake up refreshed like this every morning will pay for itself a thousand fold. I've gotten more done in the first morning after my first night's sleep on this thing than I accomplished in most of the week prior. Coming from a broken down spring mattress that had me tossing and turning all night, the difference in quality of sleep really is that stark.

A History and Overview of Gel-Infused Mattresses

Products made with traditional “gel” are so common even cows get to use them. Pasture Mats are gel pads on the ground for cows to stand on, but in order to utilize gel in comfort technology for humans things needed to change.Since people aren’t as heavy as cows, straight gel won’t work for us, as it pushes back too much. That’s why gel mattresses for humans are combined with memory foam in hopes to provide more comfort and equal pressure across the body.A History of Gel-Infused Mattresses
Gel-infused mattresses, were first manufactured in 2006 by Charles Yost. Yost also developed memory foam, which was first produced for NASA in the 1970s to be used in seats on airplanes.gel mattress
Gel-infused mattresses are known as a “third generation foam.” Before gel was infused with memory foam, foam mattress options were only a traditional mattress, which is a synthetic mattress, or plant-based mattress.Gel-infused mattresses didn’t become popular until 2011, when Serta produced the iComfort mattress line.

Most companies aren’t upfront about what materials are in their gel, and only say they’re made of “phase changing materials.” However, we know that gel or gel-infused beds are made of synthetic materials that are more breathable than plain memory foam.

Gel-infused mattresses are popular because of their comfort and breathability. By contrast, many people complain that plain memory foam mattresses are too hot, or that they create a stuck feeling because of the way they shape around someone lying on it.

Gel-Infused Mattresses Are Cooler to Sleep On

Gel-infused mattresses are reportedly cooler to sleep on because they enhance air circulation, which allows body heat to escape rather than trapping it inside the mattress.

    Gel-Infused Mattresses Spring Back Faster

Gel-infused mattresses spring back to their normal shape quickly after pressure is removed. This means that it shapes around bodies faster; if you move a lot in your sleep, the mattress won’t stay compressed as long after you move off of it, and will instead shape around where you move to.

This factor makes gel-infused mattresses more comfortable, and lessens the “stuck” feeling that some people complain about with regular memory foam mattresses.

Full gel-infused mattresses aren’t the only choice available to someone who wants the comfort of gel, but doesn’t want to pay for it.

Though mattress pads and mattress toppers are often interchangeable, there can be a few differences.

Gel-Infused Mattress Pads: Thin and Cooling

Gel-infused mattress pads are a thin covering that cover the entire bed, and come in all sizes, including twin, full, queen, king, and California king. Many people use a mattress pad for its cooling properties, in addition to comfort.

Gel-Infused Mattress Toppers: More Comfort, Less Money

Gel-infused mattress toppers are usually thicker than mattress pads, and therefore provide more comfort. They’re a good option that bring together the best parts of other gel-infused options: more comfort like the full mattress while being less money, usually around $50 to $150 depending on brand and size.

As with every type of mattress, price varies greatly depending on the size of mattress and the brand. These mattresses, like the pads and toppers, come in twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.

Many brands produce gel-infused mattresses. The most popular is Serta iComfort line, which includes toppers as well as mattresses. Other brands like Lucid, Sealy and many more also offer these types of mattresses.

Gel-infused toppers cost anywhere from about $50 to approximately $350 and beyond, depending on the brand and size. Gel-infused mattresses cost between less than $150 to nearly $5,000.
