IDLE Sleep Mattress Reviews

9.3/10

Idle Sleep has been in operation for a few years now, but the company recently received an infusion of capital and a complete makeover, including the launch of two new mattresses. In this review, we take a detailed look at their entry-level memory foam mattress (Idle Gel Foam), their premium memory foam bed (Idle Gel Plush) and their flagship hybrid mattress (Idle Hybrid).

Idle mattresses are some of the most interesting mattresses-in-a-box to take the industry by storm. One of the key differentiators is that they offer multiple double sided mattresses, which they claim allows one side to always rest and recover from use. With both latex and foam flippable hybrid varieties, and cooling foam mattress options, customers respond well to their offerings. With medium and luxury firm options, Idle is definitely a brand to consider.

Overview Of All Idle Sleep Mattresses

IDLE Hybrid Mattress — This is a 14″ double-sided, hybrid mattress that features multiple different firmness options. It’s also the company’s most popular mattress, and to be honest, it’s our favorite as well.

IDLE Gel Foam Mattress — This is the company’s entry-level memory foam mattress. It rates out near the middle of the firmness scale and accommodates a variety of sleepers.

Idle Gel Plush Mattress – This is the company’s premium memory foam mattress. It has a dense, viscous memory foam feel and lands around medium on the firmness scale.

Idle Latex Hybrid — One of our favorite latex mattresses, the IDLE Sleep Latex Hybrid is a beast of a mattress that’s supportive, comfortable, and accommodating. It even has one unique feature that you don’t find on a lot of beds: you get the option to pick the firmness level of each side of the bed. For instance, you can select two firm sides, two soft sides, or a soft and a firm side. We have no shortage of good things to say about the Idle Latex Hybrid.

Idle Sleep Company Policies

It’s bed-in-a-box industry standard to offer free shipping, free returns, a 100-night risk-free trial, and a 10-year warranty. Idle steps it up, though, with their 18 month trial period and lifetime warranty. That means you get to sleep on their mattress for over a year to make sure it’s really the right one for you. If you decide it isn’t quite what you’re looking for at any time within that trial period, you can call up the company and have the bed picked up, free of charge, and receive a full refund.

But if you do keep the bed, you the company will back it with a limited lifetime warranty, which, in their words, means “in the event of a defect, [Idle] will repair the defect or replace [the mattress] with a current comparable model and size of a Idle Sleep mattress.”

In terms of setting up your Idle mattress, just like any other bed-in-a-box, you need to cart the box inside your house, remove all of the packaging, and allow the mattress a few hours to fully decompress. This is the case with most of the beds that we’ve tested. If they come in a box, they take a day or two to fully expand. Not a big deal, but something you should know.

Idle Hybrid Mattress Review

Since the Idle Hybrid is the company’s most popular mattress, and our favorite as well, we thought it was only fitting to start there. Below you’ll find all the information you’ll need to decide whether this bed is right for you.

Flippable Design: Layers And Construction

The Idle Hybrid is a double-sided, flippable mattress so its construction is sort of like a sandwich. The Hybrid has seven layers within its cover with the top and bottom three layers being the same.

The first layer is 1″ of Idle Quilting Foam (for softness), then 1″ of Air Flow Response Foam (for bounce and breathability), then 2″ of Cooling Buoyancy Foam (for responsiveness and pressure relief), and then 6″ of Quantum Edge-to-Edge Pocketed Coils (for support).

The bottom three layers, like we mentioned before, are a repeat of the top three, but in inverse order. Idle has designed the bed to be flippable with the intent of making it last longer. The company says that if you periodically flip and spin your mattress, you can postpone having to replace it due to sagging and wear.

The mattress has a nice soft cover that isn’t going to bunch up under your sheets. It’s made from Thermocool fabric, which Idle says works with your body temperature to keep you from getting too hot or too cold.

Cleaning the mattress will be just like the process with any other online bed: you need to hand wash with mild detergent and warm water. Because the bed is double sided, the cover is non-removable, and, therefore obviously not machine washable. We don’t count this as a strike against the Idle Hybrid because 90% of beds are this way.

Why Your Weight Matters

It’s important to note that weight plays a big factor in how each person perceives a mattress to feel. In our reviews, we frame the content around an average sized person (150 to 225 pounds). However, lighter body types will find that most mattresses feel firmer for them than for an average sized person. This is because they put very little pressure on a bed. Lighter sleepers lay more on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it.

Heavier folks though will generally feel like mattresses are softer than what most average sized people think. This is because these types of sleepers exert more stress on a bed and sink in quite a bit more. Keep these points in mind as you read through this review.

Overall Feel Of The Idle Hybrid Mattress

First, it’s important to note that the Idle Hybrid comes in two different firmness levels. You can choose between a Medium option and a Luxury Firm option. The medium version is their most popular and, as such, that’s what we’ll primarily be referring to in this post.

Idle’s Hybrid bed has a surprisingly soft foam feel to it, considering it has those coils. It sort of feels like an innerspring bed, but with a thick, soft foam topper. It’s quite comfortable.

If we had to pick one mattress that we think it feels like, we’d say it feels similar to the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress, which we really like, as well.

As you can see in the graphic above, we put the Medium version at a medium on our firmness scale. Of course, your weight will determine how the bed feels to you. If you’re heavier, it’ll feel softer, and if you’re petite, it’ll feel firmer. We will say, though, that heavier individuals are still going to get the needed support from this mattress.

Although you do sink into the bed a bit, it is impressively responsive. You don’t end up feeling stuck and you won’t have trouble turning over at night.

Various Sleeping Positions

We think Idle’s Hybrid mattress is a good one for back and stomach sleepers. The coils make sure it offers enough support around your hips and trunk area. As you can see in the image below, there is hardly any compression happening under JD’s core and hips. That’s what you want to see if you’re sleeping on your stomach. You want to feel the support even if the sleeping surface is soft to the touch.

It does have some give and you’ll sink in a bit (how much depends on your body type), but you still have that support under your lower back and hips so that you don’t end up with an uncomfortable gap between you and the bed. Ultimately, it’s more about how it makes you feel in the morning than anything.

This mattress is a good option for side and combo sleepers, as well. Because it’s in the middle of the firmness scale and has coils, but also a soft foam feel, it does a good job of providing pressure relief as well as support. If you sleep on your side, you do want to have that pressure relief to keep you from waking up with sore spots.

Same story for combination sleepers. We think you can sleep in any position on this mattress. And, you can easily roll between all three positions without feeling like the mattress is getting in your way.

Not An Issue For Small/Average Sized Sleepers

These types of sleepers will be just fine on this mattress. The Idle Hybrid finds a nice balance between support and pressure relief. Plus, what’s nice for these types of sleepers is that the bed is soft enough that even lighter weight people will find this mattress extremely comfortable.

A lot of times, people that weigh around 100 pounds find it hard to discern between mattresses because they really don’t sink in at all. In other words, they can’t really tell whether a mattress is soft and comfortable or not because they all feel on the firmer side. That’s not the case here—lighter sleepers will like this mattress.

Also Able To Handle Heavy People?

This is a really nice mattress for heavier individuals. First, it utilizes coils, which is a positive sign for multiple reasons. Coils, as opposed to thick slabs of support foam, tend to be more durable over the long haul.

In addition, coils also give the bed some bounce and bi-directional support (i.e. the coils compress and also provide some push-back). All this means is that heavier sleepers will find this hybrid bed provides a lot more support than the typical all-foam mattress.

The Idle hybrid is also a thick mattress coming in at a whopping 14″ tall. Compare that to the typical 10″ thick mattress from most bed-in-a-box companies and you can see why heavier folks will be well off with this bed. Lastly, as we alluded to earlier, this mattress is flippable, which can extend its useful life.

Our Thoughts On Sleeping Temperature

Although the company likes to play up its cooling materials, we think this bed is just temperature neutral, which isn’t a bad thing at all. We’ve only tested a few beds that are actually cool to the touch and really keep you cool as you sleep.

Bottom line: this mattress won’t actively keep you cool nor should you heat up excessively. However, heavier individuals may find it sleeps a little warm since they will sink into the mattress more.

And, just so you’re aware, the temperature at which you sleep during the night is impacted by more than the materials and construction of your mattress. Perhaps even more important are the sheets you use, your pajamas, room temperature, and body weight.

Support Along The Edges

The edge support with this bed is good as well. As you migrate towards the edges, you’ll notice a little bit of compression, but you never get that roll-off feeling, which is nice. Typically the firmer beds will have better edge support because they are compressing less.

Like motion transfer, this is an important consideration for couples who share a smaller size bed. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there before—your partner rolls over towards the middle of the bed at some point during the night and all of a sudden you find yourself ousted to the edge.

It’s in this instance that edge support comes into play. You don’t want your mattress to compress so much that you feel like you’re going to slide right off.

Idle Hybrid Mattress Review: Verdict

Overall, we really like this bed. We think it’s quite underrated. It checks a lot of boxes. Bottom line—if you’re looking for a durable mattress that is comfortable and accommodates all sleeper types and body types, the IDLE hybrid is a great choice.

Other Two Sided Mattresses

There really aren’t many flippable mattresses on the market right now, but they are starting to reemerge. Here are a few other beds that are (somewhat) similar to the Idle Sleep Hybrid.

Layla — This is perhaps the best known flippable mattress on the market right now. It’s a 10″ thick memory foam bed with a “soft” and “firm” side.

Zenhaven — This is the quintessential latex bed online. It has dual firmness levels and is made entirely of latex foam with an organic cotton cover.

Nolah Signature 12 — This a somewhat newer bed from Nolah, but it has two firmness levels, an organic cotton cover, and a 12″ construction.

Plank — Plank is a firm mattress that’s designed with minimalism in mind. It’s from the company Brooklyn Bedding, even though they don’t market it on their main site.

CouchBed — As the name implies, it is part mattress and part sofa. Beyond that, CouchBed isn’t all that special.
