What We’ll Cover In This Nectar Review

Nectar has a great trial period, a great warranty, a great price point, and is a great mattress. The medium-firm, gel memory foam mattress does a good job isolating movement, relieving pressure on hips and shoulders and responding when you shift positions throughout the night.

Nectar uses different types of foam layers in their mattress core, giving the sort of support that will prevent you from getting sinking into the mattress, but still, contour to the parts of your body that need some give while you’re sleeping.

In this review, we will discuss who the Nectar is best for, some highlights of the mattress and where the Nectar excels. We know there is a perfect mattress for everyone, so let’s get started and see if Nectar is that mattress for you!

Brand Snapshot

Nectar has been churning out popular bedding products since 2017 when the brand launched the Original Nectar mattress. Since then, the company’s added on another bed (the Nectar Lush) as well as adjustable bases, pillows, sheets, weighted blankets, and more!

We won’t be getting into all these goodies today, but we will take a moment later on to compare Nectar to two of its biggest competitors in the game: Purple and Casper. But before we do any of that, we’ve got to figure out what’s going on inside the Original Nectar mattress.

What is the Nectar Mattress Made of?

The Nectar mattress is an all-foam bed with an 11” profile. It employs a quilted cover, overtop layers of gel-infused memory foam, support memory foam, and high-density poly foam to establish a gentle vibe full of sinkage and pressure relief.

To get a better understanding of how these materials work together, let’s dive into the layers!

Cover – The Nectar kicks off with a cover quilted with a bit of memory foam. It’s got a plush feel to it and should provide sleepers with some immediate comfort as soon as they hop on the bed.

Comfort – Built with gel-infused memory foam, the comfort layer has a supremely slow response to pressure. As you stretch out on the bed, you’ll likely feel yourself sinking deeply into this top layer, with the material contouring to your body for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. And while memory foam’s deep sinkage usually leads to overheating in the night, Nectar’s managed to mitigate this problem by infusing its memory foam with a cooling gel.

Transition – Up next you’ll find a transitional layer of memory foam, which has a slightly quicker response to pressure than the foam above it. This section is meant to ease the sleeper into the firmer base below, helping to extend the contouring of the comfort layer even deeper into the mattress.

Base – And finally, we land on a layer of high-density poly foam. This dense material provides the bed with its stability and shape, working to support the softer comfort and transition layers.

How Does the Nectar Feel?

So, that’s all well and good, but how does the Nectar Mattress actually feel? To find out, I’m going to put this bad boy through a few different tests, starting with firmness.

As with any feel factor, firmness is subjective, and can change a lot depending on one’s size, shape, and weight. Therefore, my interpretation of the Nectar may differ from your own. For reference, I’m 5’10”, 190 lbs., and prefer to sleep on my stomach.

After rolling around on the Nectar, I decided to give it a 6/10 on the firmness scale. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this mattress is slightly on the softer side.

Even before hopping on this bed, I knew it was going to be super gentle, thanks to its thick top layers of memory foam. This material provides the structure with a ton of sinkage and body-contouring, which means most folks will feel more “in” the bed than “on top” of it. This softness could work especially well for side sleepers or other folks in need of deep pressure relief. However, stomach sleepers and those who move between multiple positions in the night may find that the mattress isn’t quite firm enough to support their slumber preferences (more on that below).

Testing the nectar mattress

Next up, let’s see how the Nectar mattress does on my Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer tests!

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a new mattress. Basically, it refers to a bed’s capacity for alleviating tension at sensitive spots along the body, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To demonstrate the Nectar’s pressure-relieving properties, I’m going to use a handy dandy pressure map!

Using this gizmo couldn’t be easier: I simply roll it out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest. As I move around, the gadget records the force exerted by my body, creating a colored “map” of the pressure. For reference, blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.

Back – I’d say the Nectar felt pretty comfortable on my back! The memory foam top layers brought some pleasant pressure relief to both my lumbar region and shoulders, resulting in a nice, cozy sink. However, the longer I stayed in this position, the more I could feel my hips sinking out of alignment with my shoulders, which leads me to believe this may not be the best mattress for strict back sleeping.

Side – I expected the Nectar to shine on my side and shine it did. The thick top layers of memory foam provided plenty of room to sink in for deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, working to prevent the painful “jamming” you might experience on a firmer bed. In general, I think the Nectar could be a fantastic pick for side sleepers.

Stomach – Of the three positions, I’d say I liked sleeping on my stomach the least. As soon as I flipped onto my belly, I could feel my hips sinking out of line with my shoulders. This is a big no-no for prone sleepers as it means your spine’s been knocked out of proper alignment, which can cause aches and pains in the morning. Long story short, strict stomach sleepers will want to go with a firmer mattress.

Motion Transfer

Let’s wrap up this section by taking a little look at motion transfer, which refers to the movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. An important factor for all to consider, but especially those who sleep with a child, partner, or rowdy pet!

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, Eight inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

These are great motion transfer results, which means you shouldn’t be too bothered by your bed mate’s movements in the night. I’m not too surprised to see such low disturbance, as memory foam does a fabulous job of absorbing and isolating motion.

Nectar Mattress vs.

Now that we’ve got a pretty solid understanding of the Nectar mattress, let’s see how it compares to some of its biggest competition on the market. Below, I’m going to size up the Nectar against the Purple and Casper mattresses.

  • The Purple mattress is built with hyper-elastic polymer over high-density poly foam for a bouncy, supportive, and cooling feel. While both beds are technically “all-foam,” the unique polymer material in the Purple (a quasi-rubbery, collapsible grid) makes for a much livelier structure.
  • In general, I’d recommend the Purple for combo sleepers in need of optimized mobility. Unlike with the Nectar, there’s not a lot of sinkage here, so folks should feel more “on top” of the bed than “in” it.
  • Pricewise, the Purple is more expensive than the Nectar.

  • The Casper mattress is closer in feel to the Nectar than the Purple. However, it deviates from the former by placing its memory foam top layer over a layer of latex-like alternative foam, as opposed to another layer of memory foam. This results in a highly supportive structure with more lift.
  • Overall, I’d say the Casper has a pleasant balanced vibe, providing sleepers with both pressure relief and support. Back and combo sleepers might especially like the feel of this mattress.
  • Again, the Casper is more expensive than the Nectar, but pretty much in line with the purple. A Queen-sized Casper mattress retails for $1,095.

Should you buy the Nectar Mattress?

Well folks, we’ve finally made it to the end of this Nectar mattress review! After assessing its construction, feel, and competition, it’s time to decide: Is this bed the right one for you? Unfortunately, I can’t make that decision for you, but I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you on your way.

Nectar Pros

  • Given its ultra-soft construction, I’d highly recommend the Nectar mattress for side sleepers! These folks need extra special TLC at the shoulders and hips, which this bed more than provides with its gentle top layers of pressure-relieving memory foam.
  • In fact, anyone who really, really, really loves memory foam will likely enjoy the Nectar as its feel is dominated by the plush material.
  • I’d also say that the Nectar is a fantastic value buy, especially when compared to other memory foam options on the market.

Nectar Complaints

  • Though the softness of the Nectar will likely work wonders for those in need of deep pressure relief, it’s not the most well-suited for stomach sleepers as these dreamers require much firmer support.
  • In general, this isn’t a very bouncy bed, so may not be a great fit for folks who need to move around and change positions with ease.

How Much Does The Nectar Mattress Cost?

How long will a Nectar last?

An all-foam mattress like the Nectar should last for upwards of 7 years. Of course, this depends on a lot of factors from body weight to the number of people in the bed. A great thing about Nectar, though, is that its mattresses come with a forever warranty, so you should be set for life!

Do you need a box spring?

Nope, unless you want one! You should feel free to roll out your Nectar on the floor, a slatted bed frame, or a box spring, depending on your preference.

Does Nectar mattress get softer?

As with any all-foam mattress, the Nectar is going to get softer over time. You can mitigate this by rotating the bed 180 degrees every few months to prevent sagging in one spot.
